Tirzepatide

GIP/GLP-1 dual agonist

Each vial contains 10 mg of Tirzepatide.

Tirzepatide is a synthetic dual agonist at the GIP and GLP-1 receptors. Semaglutide acts at GLP-1 only; GIP is the second receptor and the class difference. The SURPASS programme tested it across type 2 diabetes with HbA1c as the primary endpoint, including a head-to-head against semaglutide; the SURMOUNT programme carried it into obesity with body weight as the endpoint. The finished medicines Mounjaro (type 2 diabetes) and Zepbound (obesity) are the approved forms; material on this page is research material, not those medicines.

How it works

Two receptors rather than one is the whole of the class difference, and it is the reason this compound is studied on its own terms rather than as another GLP-1 analogue. What follows is what the published work at each of the two examines, and which trial programme belongs to which finished medicine.

  • GLP-1

    Incretin receptor

    The receptor behind the approved incretin drugs. The literature at it concerns appetite signalling in the central nervous system and glucose-dependent insulin release. That is what the papers examine, not a finding about this vial.

  • GIP

    Second incretin receptor

    The receptor a dual agonist adds. Studied for its part in how ingested energy is handled, and for how agonism there interacts with GLP-1 agonism in the same molecule. Semaglutide does not act here; that is a difference of class, not a ranking of the two.

  • SURPASS and SURMOUNT

    The approved-drug programmes

    SURPASS enrolled people with type 2 diabetes and used HbA1c as the primary endpoint, including a head-to-head against semaglutide. SURMOUNT enrolled people with obesity and used body weight as the endpoint. Those programmes belong to the finished medicines, not to this vial.

  • Mounjaro and Zepbound

    The approved medicines, not this vial

    The FDA approved Mounjaro for type 2 diabetes and Zepbound for obesity. Those indications belong to the finished, inspected, prescribed products. They are not indications for research material sold here.
